Abstract:

Operating a process plant in a safe and reliable state is essential for high quality production and high throughput. Today’s automation technology is mainly based on monitoring, i.e. controlling fixed limits and notifying alarms.Further, the companies gather huge numbers of process relevant variables as well as secondary information such as diagnostic information. With the rising trend for asset data analytics, which enables the availability of many more secondary variables, the amounts of data will increase more rapidly. The methods of turning big data into smart data by utilizing this asset data to run the plant in a safer manner is still subject of research. In our presentation we will introduce new functions for advanced data analytics with the purpose to run the plant in a more reliable and safer manner. The solutions introduced here are all based on available historical data of the process, which includes time series measurements, events and messages from a control system as well as connected devices. The first analytical functions address challenges like poorly tuned or unreliable control loops which might directly lead to safety and plant performance relevant problems. This highly automated monitoring and optimization of control loop performance contributes to improved quality and throughput.Second, the analysis of mechanical assets like pumps and valves is covered as these assets often represent critical components to process operations. Their monitoring and predictive maintenance is therefore essential – at least for the most significant assets. The third very important element for safe plant operation is a proper and reliable alarm management, as alarms are usually the first indication for the operator to intervene in case of abnormal behavior. Getting transparency about the performance of the current alarm system, based on international norms and standards is the starting point for improvement.Running the plant in a safe and reliable manner leads to higher quality production and improved throughput where the smart utilization of data though intelligent analytics provides performance transparency, enabling decisive optimization.
