Abstract:
This work gives an overview about sustainable biofuels ready for replacement or as blending compo-nent of fossil fuels in transport (gasoline and diesel) and aviation (jet fuel e.g. Jet A-1). Information about their cur-rent use, production as well as physical and chemical properties is presented. Additionally, experimentally deter-mined fundamental combustion properties, i.e. laminar burning velocity and ignition delay time, of selected biofuels are shown and compared to conventional fuels. Among the investigated fuels are n- and iso-butanol, being of interest as “green” admixture to gasoline. For aviation, farnesane and Alcohol-to-Jet SPK (synthetic paraffinic kerosene) are considered which both are certified for their use as blending components in jet fuels, besides two further synthetic jet fuels, Alcohol-to-Jet SKA (synthetic kerosene with aromatics) and ReadiJet.
