Comprehensive LCA of a Jet-A1 Aviation Fuel Containing Different Renewable Kerosene

Abstract:

The main objective of the DEMO-SPK project is to examine the behaviour of a Jet A1 multiblend under realistic conditions in the general fuel supply infrastructure of a large airport. The project focuses on the investigation of conventional Jet-A1, mixed with several bio-based kerosene components. DEMO-SPK offers the unique opportunity to address open questions directly related to the large-scale introduction of alternative aviation fuels, for instance the influence on air quality at the airport and the potential reduction of overall life cycle emissions. In this context, a comprehensive life cycle assessment (LCA) has been conducted; in a first step for the considered bio-based sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) and in a second step for different multiblend, where conventional Jet A-1 fuel has been mixed with the SAF, with variations in composition and logistics. In this paper only the GHG emissions of bio-based kerosene components and the considered multiblends are presented.The different multiblend concepts are assessed and compared to conventional Jet A-1 fuelby means of life cycle assessments in order to identifygas(GHG) saving and thus with the highest contribution to climate protection. The preliminary findings show that high GHG emission savings are possible through the use of multiblends. The overall GHG emissions can be reduced up to 35% compared to the use of conventional Jet A-1 fossil fuel.
