Abstract:

The future gas supply will gradually become more dependent on renewable fuels, particularly biogas and hydrogen. Because of this, the composition variability in the grid will increase and the interchangeability between fuels must be ensured. When the adequacy of a determined fuel to replace another is analysed, safety, emissions, and efficiency must be considered. Currently, gas interchangeability norms generally consider the Wobbe index and specific gravity as adequate criteria. However, when fuels other than natural gas are injected into the grid, laminar flame speed (SL) and flame stability should also be considered, as these have a significant impact in burner design. This work intends to assess the interchangeability of biogas blends enriched with hydrogen for the purpose of grid injection to replace natural gas. An experiment to assess flame stability in a Bunsen burner is performed, and simulations in a 1D-FPF routine in CANTERA are conducted to determine SL. Three biogas blends are studied: BG100, BG90, and BG80 (100%CH4, 90%CH4/10%CO2, 80%CH4/20%CO2), with H2 enrichment (....2) up to 10%. The impact of blend composition on the Wobbe index and specific gravity is also determined. It was found that BG100 and BG90, with ....2=10%, enable interchangeability, as the Wobbe index is within accepted intervals and SL variation between blends did not exceed 7%.
