Abstract:
The use of biomass to produce energy is becoming more and more frequent as it helps to achieve a sustainable environmental scenario. However, the exploitation of this fuel source does have drawbacks that need to be solved. Besides, the revalorization of this kind of energy source is still being explored, as the torrefaction treatment which helps to improve the properties of the biomass. In this work, the use of residual biomass as olive and vineyard pruning, as raw as torrefied, was studied in order to improve its properties for pulverized fuel combustion facilities. The study consists in a co-firing of bituminous coal and biomass (raw and torrefied).. A visualization system based on a CCD camera was installed to analyze flame characteristics. Different flame parameters were calculated in order to assess tendencies between flame characteristics and other combustion efficiency related variables. Besides, pollutant emissions, were also measured and analysed at different thermal loads. Results showed that CO emissions increased for both torrefied and raw biomass blends as the biofuel share was increased. NO emission level was similar between torrefied and raw biomass. Regarding the vineyard prunings case, the NO emission level generated by the raw material during the combustion was higher than by the torrefied material. The visualization analysis showed that the torrefied biomass generated flames with a lower intensity, which could be related to their lower VM/FC ratio while the 2D map analysis suggested a higher confinement of the flame for torrefied material, which could be generated because of the coarser particle size distribution.
