Abstract:

By 2030, the fixed remuneration under the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) will expire for a large number of existing biogas plants. At the same time, the share of fluctuating renewable energies in the energy system will increase sharply. Against this background, a research project supported by the Federal Environment Agency examined which options exist for an economically and ecologically continued operation of the existing biogas plants until 2030. The aim of the project is to find economically and ecologically feasible operating models until 2030 and thereby contribute to changing the energy system. For this purpose, options for existing biogas plants were identified and possible plant concepts assessed.
