Abstract:
This study illustrates the feasibility of using three different pretreatments of spruce sawdust to abolish basic dyes like Methylene Blue (..) from water and wastewater. Specifically, the pretreatments are (a) autohydrolysis, (b) diethylene glycol / water treatment (c) diethylene glycol / water / sulfuric acid treatment. The process parameters were temperature (160, 180 and 200 °C) and pretreatment time (0 and 50 min reaction time; preheating period was not included). The adsorption was characterised using two isotherm adsorption models, specifically Freundlich and Langmuir. The maximum adsorption capacity according to the Langmuir isotherm model was 79.7 mg g-1 for spruce sawdust pretreated with diethylene glycol / water / sulfuric acid at 200oC and 50 minutes compared to 29 mg g-1 for the untreated material.
