Abstract:

The European gas market is expected to grow and is believed that may surpass oil in the energy mix. Despite the decrease in production of gas, there is biogas and unconventional gas that emerged to fill the growing gap of demand. Longstanding tendencies in the industry that will form the forthcoming gas markets have placed them as two alternative routes that Europe should exploit to secure energy efficiency. European countries have been acknowledged their catalytic role in this transformation. Unconventional gas and biogas provide many benefits but they generate some concerns as well which influence their adoption. This study aims at assessing the risks posed by unconventional and biogas production and proposes alternatives to overcome them. An Impact Assessment was conducted. Unconventional gas and biogas production were evaluated under the light of economic, environmental health & safety and social criteria. Comparisons were conducted to evaluate the advantages and drawbacks of each energy source. Moreover, it was examined how effectively the existing EU regulatory framework has been applied to both biogas and unconventional gas exploration activities. The technological evolution in gas market and the increasing share of bioenergy in Europe will define the prospective policy regimes regarding the future energy policy.
