Abstract:

It is common knowledge that household fire stoves contribute significantly to the overall particulate matter emissions. Especially the contribution to violation of daily emission limits is significant [1]. Particulate matter emissions measured under optimal approval testing conditions are reported to be less than 10 % of those in typical operation [3]. For this reason, there is a need for new test methods corresponding to the real usage of stoves. In reference to methods developed in Canterbury, NZ, and within the ‚beReal‘-Project, a downdraft stove is tested according to a ‘real-life’ procedure and the reference procedure according to the standards. For a downdraft stove the primary burning rate in the upper chamber and the secondary air supply and mixing in the hearth zone are important [5]. It is assumed, that the grate has a big influence on the performance. Therefore, the grate is in the focus of this investigation. On a test rig in accordance with DIN EN 13240 and DIN EN 16510-1 a downdraft stove is operated with different grates under these two procedures. Data are compared with approval data for the stove. Preliminary results show that the approval data cannot be reproduced yet. Maximum load runs exhaust up to twice the emissions as the reference experiment does. Test runs with throttled air supply at minimum load, as suggested by the manual, end up at a values of at least four times of the reference procedure.
