Abstract:

There are two traditional technologies for production biofuels for transport in Poland – grain fermentation for producing ethanol and transesterification technology for producing esters from vegetable oils. Esters and ethanol are mainly mixed with oil and gasoline to produce biofuels. There is also a new policy for implementing the production of advanced biofuels like ethanol from lignocellulosic materials and kerosene obtained from the hydrogenation of vegetable oils, waste oils and fats (HVO) in Poland. The total production of biofuels in Poland amounts to 56 PJ. Two new units for energy use and biofuels production have been defined. One of them is POLpec which is 4400 PJ and reflects the Poland’s primary energy consumption in 2016, while the other one is POLbep amounting to 56 PJ and equal to Poland’s biofuels production in 2016. These units are very useful for comparing energy consumption and biofuel production in other regions and countries in a given year.
