Abstract:

The variation of properties of woody and non-woody biomass fuels poses a challenge to small-scale combustion technologies. Not only constructional aspects, e.g. the structure of the grate or the ash removal solution but also aspects related to the control strategy need to consider the broad variety of non-woody biomass fuels. Performance and efficiency loss, ash- and slag-related problems, increase of emission release through to damage or even failure of the appliance are the consequences of improper fuel utilization. To enable trouble-free operation and to ensure high combustion quality with a broad variety of biomass fuels it is necessary to focus research on the development of fuel-flexible appliances. The aim of the GrateAdvance project is the development of fuel-flexible grate solutions – amongst others further optimization of the patented Screw Burner technology that is adaptable to different fuel qualities. The utilization of different fuel types initially requires the determination of suitable settings and parameters. By conducting standardized practical tests, the combustion behavior of 10 different solid biomass fuels was investigated and relevant operational variables were identified. Adapting the feed rate to the fuel properties to regulate the heat output was feasible. The air supply was optimized to improve the quality of combustion.
