Characterisation, Testing and Modelling of a Variety of Pulverised Biomass Fuels Burnt in an Axially Air Staged, Swirl-stabilised Test Burner for Industrial Heating Applications

Abstract:

An air staged, swirl-stabilised, burner was developed for pulverized, solid biomass combustion in an industrial heating application. In parallel with this development, a CFD-based combustion model was validated to support the design and optimisation of new test burners and to aid in data interpretation. This model was based on an Eulerian/Lagrangian approach and evolved from a model of pulverised coal combustion. In preparation for testing, a detailed characterisation of fuel properties was carried out on a number of different types of pulverised biomass fuels including hard and soft woods, waste material from lumberyards, etc. Several of these biomass fuels were additionally pre-treated using torrefaction prior to grinding. Testing was performed over a wide range of boundary conditions, including a variation of air to fuel ratio and airflow split between the primary and secondary stages. Predicted NOX emissions agreed very well with measured values. CO emissions were significantly under predicted but trends agreed fairly well against measurements. In the experiments, the impact of fuel properties (particle size distribution, elemental composition and influence of torrefaction) on emissions performance could be quantified. The combination of experiments and modelling will be employed in the design of future commercial pulverised biomass burners.
