Abstract:
Use of microalgal biomass for biogas production has gained greater attention in the last years. Biogas production is a simple and straight forward energy production technology, however; rigid cell wall characteristics are one of the main limitations lowering biogas production from microalgae. Application of pretreatment prior to anaerobic digestion disrupts microalgal cell wall and improves biogas yields. In this study, Scenedesmus biomass was subjected to ultrasonic (U) (160 W, 20 min) or enzymatic pretreatment with Viscozyme (E1, E2) (0.15-0.3 ml enzyme/g DW) prior to anaerobic digestion. Moreover, ultrasound and enzymatic pretreatment were applied consecutively as combined pretreatment (C1, C2). The solubilization results showed that sCOD, carbohydrate, and protein solubilization were enhanced with after all types of pretreatment; however, higher solubilization was observed for C2 pretreatment. BMP tests also indicated that highest increase in biogas production was observed for combined pretreatment with higher enzyme dose (C2) as 2 fold higher than raw biomass. Therefore, this study showed that combined pretreatment methods enhanced both solubilization and biogas production more than mono pretreatment methods for Scenedesmus biomass.
