Abstract:

A two-step process for the complete gasification of aqueous carbohydrate streams towards H2 and CH4 production is proposed. Sucrose is selected as a model compound that represents aqueous carbohydrates in waste water streams. In the first step, called stabilisation, sucrose is treated with H2 under mild temperatures and is fully converted to sorbitol and mannitol using 5wt% Ru/C as a hydrogenation catalyst. In the second step, the stabilised mixture is gasified at 300°C using 5wt% Pt-Al2O3 and 5wt% Ru-C. A combination of the two catalysts in series provides enhanced gasification without compromising on the H2 yield. This process provides an opportunity to obtain clean water and valuable fuels (H2 and CH4) from low-value carbohydrate or wastewater streams that otherwise would typically present coking problems upon gasification. The presence of an additional stabilisation step enhances gasification with no additional requirement of H2.
