Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to examine the feasibility of pretreating barley straw to optimize its heating value. The research is based on the pretreatment of barley straw via acid hydrolysis method in a batch reactor, with time, temperature and concentration of dilute acid solution as pretreatment parameters. Diluted sulfuric acid was chosen as the catalyst in the treatment aquatic solution. The process parameters were the temperature (160; 180 and 200 0C), the acid concentration (0.01; 0.023 and 0.035 M), as well as the reaction time (0; 20; 40 min). After the pretreatment the accurately weighed quantities (0.4 to 0.6 g) of pretreated barley straw were measured, and then they were placed in the oxygen container with pressure of 25 bar oxygen and a specific length of ignition wire. The combustion container was placed in the calorimeter's adiabatic tank container which was filled with 2000 g distilled water. At the calorimeter tank, the water was shaken at steady speed while the temperature was measured per minute. The heating value was measured. The moisture content of the samples was 7.1%. The optimal pretreatment conditions were determined using two different approaches: a new combined severity factor (CSF) and the response surface methodology (RSM) based on Box-Behnken experimental design.
