Abstract:

Co-combustion between sub-bituminous coal (SB) and four agricultural biomass fuels, namely rice straw (RS), palm empty fruit bunch (EFB), Napier grass (NP) and sugarcane top/leaf (CTL) was carried out to investigate the combustion characteristics and tendency of fouling and bed agglomeration. The burning profiles from TG experiments showed that blending more biomass into coal tended to increase the reactivity of the blends with a slight positive synergy. The fouling tendency, determined by the amount of deposition at condition simulating convective zone of combustion boiler, was low in coal and significantly higher in biomass, the extent of which depended on the inorganic composition of biomass. The same trend was obtained for the fouling tendency of the blends of coal with respective biomass. Tested in a bubbling fluidised bed reactor, defluidisation was found early at 1000-1300 s for biomass; while the bed pressure drop was stable for >8 hr with no agglomerates found for coal. The higher Al content at increased coal ratio in the blends was found to be the main factor extending the time to defluidisation. FactSage simulation was also conducted to predict the amount and composition of phases formed.
