Abstract:

This study aims to elucidate the interaction of three model compounds of lignocellulosic biomass; glucose, xylose, and guaiacol; under sub- and supercritical conditions and to determine the kinetics of the reactions involved. The experiment was carried out in a tubular reactor in a range of temperatures of 350 to 450 °C, a pressure of 25 MPa, and varying residence times up to 40 s. A feedstock is a mixture of glucose, xylose, and guaiacol at designated proportion and the total concentration of the feedstock solution is in a range of 0.4 to 0.5 wt. %. It was found in this study that the yield of char decreased when guaiacol was added in the feedstock mixture although the char formation from guaiacol is a radical reaction and supposed to be promoted in supercritical region. The addition of guaiacol affected on intermediate reactions of glucose and xylose, whereas the addition of glucose and xylose did not have significant influence on intermediate reactions of guaiacol. The presence of guaiacol in the feedstock decreased the rate of radical reactions ,while the rate of ionic reactions were not affected. The interaction was confirmed by the change in reaction kinetic parameters of each reaction.
