Abstract:

Current energy policy led by European Commission places special emphasis on reducing greenhouse and toxic gases emission from the energy sector. Gasification of biomass technology seems to be able to meet these targets. Essential problem facing introduction of this technology to industry is contamination of the synthetic gases produced during gasification such as biomass tar and ammonia. Modified setup of HiTAC technology, called Two Stage Combustion showed the ability to reduce these contaminants. The paper presents results of experimental and numerical investigation of synthesis gases combustion with NH3 and C5H5N as reference component of Ni compounds bounded in biomass tar. During the experiments, influence of physicochemical properties of fuel and operation parameters on the overall emission were investigated. It has been shown that usage of two stage combustion technology allows to avoid transfer of nitrogen bounded syngas components to nitric oxides. During investigations in the most favorable conditions, only 20%of Ni species were converted to nitrogen oxides. Obtained results have been confirmed in numerical analysis using Cantera Flame code and reactor hybrid approach.
