Abstract:
The objective of BIOSURF (BIOmethane as SUstainable and Renewable Fuel) is to increase the production and use of biomethane (from animal waste, other waste materials and sustainable biomass), for grid injection and as transport fuel, by removing non-technical barriers and by paving the way towards a European biomethane market. The discussion about sustainability is not new. However, there is still a big knowledge gap about how to quantify the sustainability criteria and the indicators, especially at this point in time where most of the political frameworks correlate only with the “greenhouse gas saving approach”. The mitigation of greenhouse gases is a key driver for renewable energy deployment, but it is not the only one. So far, the European legal framework for bioenergy sustainability criteria is provided by the Renewable Energy Directive (RED) 2009/28/EC[1]. A new RED is under preparation. According to the current RED, until 2018 biofuels and bioliquids have to save at least 60% of the greenhouse gas emission in comparison with fossil energy sources[1]. Indeed, it is time to open a new discussion about the economic and social pillars in the biomethane production and supply; hence all the stakeholders have to find a common value for a European market.
