Abstract:

Fundamental study of an updraft gasification is a key to understanding behaviors and important factors during the process. This paper presents 2-dimensional CFD simulation of updraft gasification. Updraft gasifier in an experiment has a size of 5 kg for biomass fuel per batch and diameter reactor is 160 mm. Updraft gasifier modeling is represented packed bed combustion. The hydrodynamic of packed bed performed by Euler-Granular model. Thermal conversion of solid fuel can be explained by Discrete Phase Model (DPM). The UDF code is developed for control combustion in reactor modeling for the approach to experiment data. The UDF code that is verified can use to predict temperature during startup time when the diameter of the reactor has changed. Temperature prediction of diameter reactor can help design the reactor in term of startup temperature. Three types of fuels have been tested and simulated as well. The effect of fuel can be used to reduce the startup time. In verification of the model, the UDF was used in each fuel and the result of verification was acceptable which can be compared to the temperature during starting, increase and saturation period with the experimental temperature.
