Abstract:

The aim of this study was to investigate the potential for anaerobic co-digestion of donkey manure (DM) with vegetable waste (VW) and establish the optimum mixing ratio for co-digestion of the mixtures. The research was carried out using a field batch biogas digester at the University of Fort Hare. The substrates were analysed for total solids (TS), volatile solids (VS), total alkalinity (TA) and calorific value (CV) before they were co-digested in different mixing ratios. The highest methane content of 75% was produced from co-digestion of 40% donkey dung with 60% vegetable waste. The pH for all the mixtures was within the expected range for optimum methane production and the alkalinity values were all high showing good buffering capacity. Therefore, it was depicted from the results that anaerobic digestion of more than one kind of substrate established positive synergism in the digester by providing more balanced nutrients as well as buffering capacity and enhanced the anaerobic digestion process.
