Abstract:

Despite a rise in installed generation capacity worldwide, the deployment of renewable energy can at times be challenging if projects do not meet certain standards required to obtain the necessary financial support. Added to this, there is a perception of high technology risk, cumbersome administrative procedures and insufficient transparency in the project cycle, as well as limited access to institutional and commercial financing instruments. The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has developed the Project Navigator, an online platform providing comprehensive, easily accessible and practical information, tools and guidance to assist in the development of bankable bioenergy projects. The present guidelines provide crucial information, analysis and best practices covering the complete project lifecycle of a solid biomass fuel processing plant, such as a wood chip provider, a wood pellet plant or a biochar production facility. These guidelines focus on the processing of woody biomass feedstock into biomass fuels, such as pellets, wood chips, briquettes or biochar. These solid biofuels can be then used to produce heat, cold, power or used as a cooking fuel. By using the guidelines, project developers can apply typical project approaches and meet requirements to successfully develop a solid biomass fuel processing plant.
