Abstract:

Energy recovery from buckwheat husks (BH) offers an opportunity for sustainable management of this biomass residue. The BH are agricultural wastes which are not used for food or feed. In this study, an effort is made to evaluate and compare the energy and material recovery from BH through two different routes: i) the pyrolysis which is a thermochemical process and ii) the anaerobic digestion (AD) which is a biochemical process. To evaluate and compare the energy conversion efficiency of the two routes, all products generate during each process were quantified and analyze in order to realize the mass and energy balances. The first results obtained show, that for the studied biomass, the pyrolysis process seems to be more interesting for an energy recovery with a GEEelec (electrical gross energy efficiency) of 54% against 40% for the AD. This result is explained by the fact that the AD allows recovering only 48% of the total available energy whereas the pyrolysis allows recovering 95% of this energy if the char is energetically recovered. In the case, where the char and the digestate are material recovery, the AD becomes more interesting. Indeed, its GEE (gross energy efficiency) is unchanged whereas that of pyrolysis decreased at 27%. However, the char can be presented others use instead of energy such as materials for gas treatment like this or like precursors to produce activated carbons.
