Abstract:

In order to find an alternative to maize for biogas production, two perennial grasses, Virginia Mallow and Cup plant, were tested in the frame of SidaTim project (FACCE-SURPLUS). The objective of this trial is to collect information on the yields of these two perennial grasses, never tested in Italy. In the Spring 2016 an experimental trial was established at Casale Monferrato (Po Valley) comparing two provenances of Sida, one of Silphium and the poplar clone ‘Orion’. Poplar were planted with a density of 10000 cuttings per hectare, the other species with 40000 plants per hectare. The plots of the perennial grasses were split in two subplots, one was sown and in the other seedlings were transplanted. At the end of the first years, survival of plants was very good (94%). The aboveground dry biomass production is statistically significant among the crop evaluated, it ranged from 1.25 of Sida1 sowing to 4.68 Mg·ha-1 of Poplar clone Orion.
