Developmentof a Model to Predict the Grate Burning Profile of Biomass Derived Char

Abstract:

A model has been developed to predict how the properties of biomass derived char effect its combustion, when burnt on an open grate. This model will be a useful tool for comparing different types of char as a replacement for traditional fossil fuels. Model development has been accomplished through production of pilot scale batches of char from an array of biomass sources: pinewood, mixed hardwood, agriculture residues and oil industry waste. These biomass were subject to pyrolysis at peak temperatures between 280-650 °C, which were then briquetted into cylinders in a 6 ton hand press using a starch binder at 5% wt. basis. Proximate analysis was then performed on the char briquettes which were then burnt, where the temperature profile was recorded. It has been found a simple two step reaction model using two first order reactions in series is analogous to the heating and cooling batch temperature vs time curve; while the properties of the char, specifically fixed carbon and volatile fractions, can be used to generate constants to control the rate of heating and cooling in the reaction. This model is applicable to char produced at all temperatures studied within the range and char types.
