Abstract:
Pressure for increasing the biomass usage in the European area creates the need for new power plants. The location of the biomass power plant has a high impact on the cost of the plant because feedstocks price for the biomass is greatly affected by logistics costs. The agent-based simulation model was developed to estimate costs and availability of feedstock for a number of biomass demand points by using spatial information of the feedstock in the European area. These values are the amount of delivered fuel to the demand site, the highest monthly storage levels, the number of deliveries arrived at the plant, the energy content of the feedstock arrived at plant, and costs of acquiring the feedstock. The results of the model are theoretical but with specific data impact of the plant location to feedstock acquisition may be estimated for agricultural residues with the model. The model uses pre-selected locations and a static GIS-analysis or optimization prior to simulation is recommended. It can be concluded that the simulation model provides a cost-efficient method to study agricultural-residue logistics taking into account the temporal and spatial variability of biomass supply.
