Abstract:

A crucial factor for the further development of wood energy is the availability of feedstock. One possible new resource is the use of woody biomass from road side vegetation. This usage leads to the question as to how far this biomass is influenced by the salt which is used for de-icing purposes on roads. Therefore the aim of this work was to investigate the chlorine concentration of road side woody biomass related to reference wood. Furthermore the distribution of chlorine among different tree parts and the impact of geographical shape of the roads were investigated. Therefore biomass samples were collected in different distances to salted and unsalted roads and relevant fuel properties including chlorine content were measured. The results of all samples show chlorine concentrations between 73 mg/kg and 1044 mg/kg. Whether rather high or low concentrations are found in the individual sample can be affected by the road side area, distance of the tree to the road or farmed land and the individual part of the tree.
