Abstract:

In this study, a comparative analysis of the forest chips market situation between the Nordic countries, here Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Norway, was carried out. Forest chips market development over the past decade wasevaluated by analyzing both demand and supply side factors for each country. All of the countrieshave a high renewable energy consumption and have already met the target for gross final energy consumption according to the Europe 2020 strategy. In total, 20.8Mtoe bioenergy was used in the Nordic countries in 2015, which was 23% of the final energy consumption, 91.9Mtoe. Especially in Finland and Sweden the share of bioenergy was high (32% and 28%) compared to Denmark and Norway (15% and 5%). Forest chips made up 3.1Mtoe, i.e. 15% of the bioenergy in the Nordic countries. Forest chips prices were rather similar (19-23 €/MWh) in all counties and they had declined due to lower energy demand. However, the market is expected to grow further in the near future according to national strategies to meet the EUtargets set in the 2030 climate and energy framework.
