Abstract:

Detailed reaction schemes are required to gain a more fundamental understanding of biomass pyrolysis, which would in turn allow the process to be controlled in a more precise way and the development of more targeted applications. The most promising detailed pyrolysis reaction scheme so far published is the one developed by Ranzi et al. for lignocellulosic biomass, which has been adapted in order to introduce secondary charring reactions. In this work, this detailed reaction scheme was coupled to a single particle model in order to describe single particle experiments that have been conducted with spruce pellets. A detailed characterization of the pyrolysis products in the experiments is firstly presented, with a good closure of the elemental mass balances. It is then shown that the model is able to predict with good accuracy the experimental results regarding mass loss, temperatures as well as, for the low temperature experiment, the final yields of the products and the online release of the main species, such as H2O, CO2 and CO. Future work should include tar cracking reactions of the volatiles at high temperatures
