Abstract:

This paper investigates on employing dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma treatment of char for improving the quality of the producer gas. This implies viz., the decomposition of char into useable fuel synthesis gas and further cleaning of producer gas during its down-streaming. The inclusion of non-thermal or "cold" DBD plasma directly into the gasification stage (used for generating producer gas) or during the downstream of producer gas might simply enhance heterogeneous gasification reactions. The yield of synthesis gas could be increased and the level of condensable volatile organic and heterocyclic compounds could be reduced. Initial investigations on characteristics of DBD plasma and the gas phase analysis indicate that the fluidization of char causes higher discharge current thereby increasing the conversion of gaseous molecules. Subsequent results of the optical emission spectroscopy point out that the gaseous species adsorbed on the surface of the char particle could be excited by DBD plasma. Summarizing all, it is expected that the present work might provide a preliminary insight into the impact of DBD plasma treatment of porous and carbon rich char. Further investigations on heterogeneous reactions, producer gas quality improvement, etc. would widen the knowledge and might help in achieving higher gasification efficiency.
