Abstract:

The continuously increasing production of organic waste is linked to the agricultural and food industries, which represents an environmental issue for today’s society that has to be solved. The high content of organic constituents, attested in this type of waste, points out the fact to be suitable for regenerative bio-energy exploitations. Under the frame of Waste to Energy principle, the related study focuses on the energy recovery of an industrial pig farm, due to energy recovery from the own organic waste produced. For this purpose the case study of Smithfield Farm Bacova Unit nearby Timisoara area was investigated. The approached methodology evaluates the biogas production calculated on the amounts of generated waste and proposes that the energy recovery occurs in combined heat and power unit (CHP), in order to mitigate the highest value of energy efficiency. For evaluation of the organic content and methane generation rate, samples of pig sludge were analyzed and tested in laboratory conditions. Findings and conclusions raised are referring also to the comparison of the present situation, in terms of the quantity of the bought energy required for industrial processes developed and the possible economical savings which could be achieved by applying the technology proposed.
