Abstract:

The feasibility of synthesis gas production through gasification of oil palm shell pellets (OPSP) in a fixedbed gasifier of continuous operationis investigated. Water vapour is used as reaction agent. Synthesis gas can be used as combustible gas in internal combustion engines to produce mechanical or electrical power; and as a feedstock for chemicalsand liquid fuels production. Biomass pelletization is carried out in order to improve the flow properties and increase the energy density of the raw material.Gasification mean temperatures between 670and 1000 °C were used. In this temperature range the hydrogen content in the synthesis gas varied between 10 % and 54 %. The calculated high heating valueof the gas was between 16and 24 MJ/Nm3. Water-biomass feeding ratios of between 0,2 and 1,5 were evaluated. H2/O2 values between 0,18 and 2,27 were obtained, a tendency to increase with water-biomass ratios is observed.
