Abstract:

The economic development and the growth of world population are followed by an expressive increase in energy consumption and municipal solid waste (MSW) generation. The city of Santo André, located in the metropolitan area of São Paulo (Grande ABC), has an estimated population of about 710 thousand inhabitants, and in 2015, 3,192 tons of recyclable wastes were generated. After the sorting process, a significant amount of waste, including combustible materials (plastic packages, paper, cardboard, etc.) is commonly discarded, comprising a loss of energy that could be recovered from the refuse-derived fuel (RDF) composition. This study aims to evaluate the energy production potential of discarded combustible materials, through physicochemical and thermal characterization (bulk density analysis, moisture determination, proximate analysis and calorific value), looking for using it as RDF in thermochemical systems for energy conversion. The LHV data of this study indicates an excellent potential fuel of recyclable MSW (raw material in natura), which is 2.6 times bigger than the LHV from the wet MSW in natura of Santo André (São Paulo). Another important aspect is related to the unnecessary discarded waste drying step in the recyclables sorting process, if looking for its energy use in thermochemical routes.
