Abstract:

Experiments with previous pilot plants at TU Wien, data from literature, and investigations on different cold flow models led to the design of an advanced 100 kWth dual fluidized bed steam gasifier. The new reactor arrangement is an optimized concept for steam gasification of a wide range of solid fuels, like biogenic residues and industrial waste materials. The aim of the novel design is to generate a nitrogen-free product gas for the production of hydrogen, heat and power, or for various subsequent syntheses (methanol, SNG, FT-diesel). The lower gasification reactor with the on-bed fuel feeding system is operated as bubbling fluidized bed, whereas the upper gasification reactor is a column of turbulent fluidized zones. For efficient in-situ tar reduction a countercurrent flow behavior of hot bed material and the product gas is present in this upper part. Therefore, a wide range of alternative low-cost fuels can be utilized. First scientific results from test runs show the feasibility of the novel fluidized bed concept. Results from the variation of gasification temperature, fuel input power, fuel type and bed material composition are presented.
