Abstract:

Electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking is an important resource conserving steel production route which constitutes approximately one third of the crude steel production. Still, 12-15 kg of fossil coal per ton of steel is used during the EAF steel production. As the European Research Fund for Coal and Steel (RFCS) project GREENEAF showed, many biogenic materials have a great potential to replace fossil coal that is currently used in steel mills. In July 2014, the follow up project GREENEAF II was initiated which aims at the investigation of complete coal substitution in an industrial scale EAF. Within the scope of this project, a quick test was developed to predict the combustion behaviour of the potential substitutes under operating conditions. Industrial scale tests with the so selected substitute were conducted successfully. The test results showed that not only pre-treated biogenic fuels are qualified for a coal substitution, but also some kinds of untreated residues from other industrial branches that currently need to be disposed at expense. Furthermore, this quick test showed that also calcium-rich slag formers can be replaced by untreated residues from paper production. This so far unidentified resource conserving potential was emphasized by trials in a pilot scale EAF.
