Abstract:

The production of liquid bioenergy carriers and chemicals from biomass can be realised by using hydrothermal conversion processes. Especially wet biomass is suitable for this kind of treatment as water is the reaction medium. A two-stage hydrothermal process was developed including first conversion of the biomass into liquid products and secondly upgrading of the intermediate liquids using heterogeneous catalysts. Therefore the composition of the first step intermediate mixture has to be applicable for the second step. By taking a close look at the product formation it is possible to follow the processes offline and make estimations concerning the right processing conditions for the specific production of chemical raw products for bioenergy production from biomass. The presented results refer to the first step of the hydrothermal conversion process. A continuous reactor system was used for the liquefaction of grass suspensions. The aim of this test series was to show that real biomass can be converted into selective products as formic and acetic acid by varying temperature (260 to 340 °C), retention time and utilization of K2CO3 as homogenous catalyst. Analyses of the product mixture were carried out by GC-FID and HPLC.
