Abstract:

Utilization of biomass in gasification plants is a promising technology to substitute fossil fuels for the production of electricity, heat, fuels for transportation and chemicals. Fluidized bed systems have proven to be suitable for gasification processes. Bed material ensures a uniform temperature distribution in the bed and acts as catalyst regarding the reduction of biomass tars.Previous studies showed a modification of bed material due to its interaction with biomass ash and additives during the process. This interaction results in the formation of calcium-rich layers on the bed material. As it has been shown in the past, this coating on olivine particles leads to an enhancement of its catalytic activity towards the water-gas-shift reaction and the reduction of tars by steam reforming reactions.Gasification can be realized using different gasifying agents such as steam, carbon dioxide (CO2) or air. CO2-gasification is a promising way for the production of a valuable syngas in the framework of carbon capture and utilization (CCU). The influence of bed particle coatings regarding the conversion of hydrocarbons in dry reforming conditions has not been investigated so far. In this work, the catalytic activity of different fresh and also used (layered) bed materials was tested regarding their ability to reduce hydrocarbons by means of dry reforming.
