Abstract:

The aim of this study was to reduce the nitrogen content in the liquid organic phases from fast pyrolysis of sewage sludge by means of liquid-liquid extraction using acids, to facilitate their use as a fuel. Different liquid organic phases obtained from pyrolysis of sewage sludge (SS) and torrefied sewage sludge (TSS) with and without catalytic treatment of the hot pyrolysis vapors were mixed with a certain amount of acid and the different phases obtained were separated and characterized. The results showed that the nitrogen content of the treated organic phases was lower than those of the initial organic phases, but this was achieved at the expense of reducing the final yields of the organic phases.
