Abstract:

LIFE+ ENERBIOSCRUB project aims to reduce the risk of forest fires by obtaining sustainable solid biofuels from shrublands of high flammability risk, using innovative methods of management and harvesting in forests that are not enough known in Southern Europe. In the context of this project, the objective of this work is the characterisation of the emissions during the combustion of the biomass produced in broom (Genista cinerascens) clearings. Three boilers are used in the tests: two of them (40 kWth and 500 kWth) are pilot plants where tests with previously defined conditions are carried out (6 hours in steady state, working as close as possible to the nominal power of the boiler); the other boiler is one of the demonstration facilities used in the ENERBIOSCRUB project which supplies hot water to a heat network. With regard to the results obtained, the combustion of broom pellets and 30 mm milled broom leads to higher emission of NOx and particles compared to the combustion of pine pellets (classified as A1 according to the ISO 17225-2:2014 standard) and 30 mm milled pine.
