Abstract:

The aim of the performed work was to acquire knowledge on the influence operating conditions of combustion plants have on the mobility and bioavailability of metals in biomass ash. Information from the leachability and the leaching behaviour of ash components was used in the environmental risk assessment of biomass ash. Test runs with wood chips were performed for this purpose. The excess air ratio in the primary combustion zone of a grate-fired pilot plant was modified to investigate its influence on ash formation, especially on the release of ash-forming elements into the gaseous phase, and thus on ash composition. Ash and dust samples (bottom, fly and heat exchanger ash) were collected and subsequently analysed with different instrumental techniques including the application of a modified three-step sequential extraction method for biomass ash samples. Obtained results were used in classifying the risk level based on the chemical association of heavy metals according to the Potential Ecological Risk Index (PERI) and Risk Assessment Code (RAC) methods.
