Abstract:

Increasing the usage of wood-based energy sources leads to a number of different logistic challenges. Different ways to solve these challenges include increasing the utilization rate of existing truck fleets, scheduling truck transportation to avoid rush hours in commuter traffic areas and making long distance transportation by railways more profitable. This paper views the possibility of using simulation as a way to estimate different impacts of the activities in fuel terminals to the logistic system by focusing on operations inside the terminal. The used models are all modified from one basic model to correspond to the different terminal types. All models work independently and give their own result sets. These result sets should be validated and analyzed with care to find a number of solutions to the given problem. It is important to have many simulation runs and compare results due to the nature of logistic problems not always having an analytic solution. Simulation approach gives the possibility to find an optimal solution rather than an exact solution.
