Abstract:
In this paper, three iron-based chemical looping systems for hydrogen/electricity (co-)generation were investigated and compared. Two chemical looping systems were fueled with biomass-derived syngas from two different gasification technologies (dual fluidized bed and entrained flow) while the third system was directly fueled with solid biomass. The systems were compared from the hydrogen/electricity production efficiency and resource consumption point of view. The effect of carbon capture on the performance of chemical looping systems was discussed. Among the cases, the chemical looping system with direct conversion of biomass was the most efficient one, with efficiencies 10-15% points higher than in syngas fueled chemical looping systems.
