Abstract:
In the present study, hot compressed water (HCW) pretreatment, wet disk milling (WDM) pretreatment and its combination were performed with the aim to reduce natural recalcitrant of lignocellulosic biomass and provide maximal access to cellulase attack. Oil palm frond fiber (OPFF) and oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) were hydrothermally pretreated at reaction temperature and time ranges from 150°C to 190°C and 10 to 20 min, respectively. Subsequent treatment with WDM resulted in fibrillation of fiber into nanofibers size thus increasing the conversion of cellulose to glucose. The effects of combined HCW and WDM pretreatments were evaluated by chemical composition changes, power consumption, particle size and morphological alterations by SEM. The successful of pretreatments were assessed by the degree of enzymatic digestibility of treated samples. Approximately about 66.2% and 55.8% of xylose yield were obtained from OPFF and OPEFB samples, respectively. The highest glucose yield obtained from OPFF and OPEFB samples under combined pretreatment were 80.5% and 90.3%, respectively which only consumed about 17.8-19.1 MJ/kg of biomass.
