Abstract:

With strong increase in bioenergy production expected in some regions, sustainability is a key concern. In this study an economic partial equilibrium model for different wood products, including wood pellets, is linked to a spatially explicit land use model to assess the impact of different scenarios of demand for woody biomass from the southeastern United States (US) up to 2030 on land use and forest management change in that region. Resulting maps of land use and forest management change serve as the basis for a spatially explicit assessment of carbon balance in the southeastern US for the different scenarios. This information will be relevant for certifying bodies, forest managers, utilities and governments who aim to steer towards sustainable development of the pellet industry.
