Abstract:

The aim of this work is to improve the process of biomolecules extraction from Spirulina platensis, using less harmful solvent to the environment as well as non-conventional processes, such as ultrasound and microwave oven. The method for extracting lipids in ultrasound included the use of solvents as 1.5% w.v-1 Na2SO4, 10% w.v-1 NaCl, hexane, ethanol and water, and different extraction times. In microwaves oven, the solvents used were ethanol, water and 1,5% Na2SO4 and extraction times of 10, 20, 30 s. Futhermore, was studied extraction by the method of ethanol contact (10, 20, 30, 40 min) after water extraction in microwaves oven (20 s). All experiments were performed in triplicate and the reuse of biomass was evaluated. The use of Na2SO4 and NaCl did not show results satifactory. Best procedure for extracting biomolecules were: a three-stage extraction by ethanol contact (10 min) after water extraction in microwaves (20 s), and the process conducted with ethanol-chloroform-water-Na2SO4 and ethanol (three-stage) as solvents in ultrasound-assisted extraction. Biomolecules (lipids, carbohydrates and phenolic compounds) from Spirulina platensis can be extracted by ultrasound and microwaves-assisted extraction.
