Abstract:
The influence of residual forest biomass characteristics on the performance of a pilot-scale BFBC was studied. The biomass leaching with water can improve its characteristics as fuel. Combustion of RFB from pine shows better performance than eucalyptus, e.g., traduced by lower CO and CH4 concentration in exit flue gases. The concentration of N2O, SO2 and HCl in the exit flue gas was very low. The results highlight the characteristic performance of fluidized beds in maintaining an isothermal operation despite of time-dependent variations in fuel characteristics and feeding fluctuation, as reflected by a stable temperature at distinct locations along the reactor height. Bottom bed ashes differ significantly from fly ash, and Si is the most abundant chemical element (oxygen not considered) found in bottom ash, reflecting the original sand bed characteristics, showing only minor amounts of chemical elements typical of biomass (e.g. Ca, Na, K). The fly ashes are composed of inorganic chemical elements typical of biomass. The pre-treatment of biomass by leaching reduces the content of some inorganics in the ashes, e.g., K and Cl. The physical-chemical characteristics of the biomass fuel can have a rather important influence on the performance of a BFBC.
