Abstract:

The project CARBOWERT explores the use of hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) for the sustainable treatment and recovery of fractions of the urban water sector in the sense of a biochar / sewchar concept. The central questions of the project are if organic pollutants and heavy metals can be eliminated during the HTC process and if the produced hydrochars are suitable as soil amendments to stimulate plant growth and reduce the production of greenhouse gases. The potential of the HTC process for the degradation and detoxification of selected organic pollutants, typically present in sewage sludge, was achieved at different HTC reaction conditions. Limitations regarding the degradation of chlorinated aromatics could be overcome by a post treatment with wet oxidation using oxygen at a pressure of 3 MPa at 200°C for 1 h.
