Abstract:
The Chair of Energy Process Engineering at FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg, the German Start-up company MicroPyros GmbH and the Fraunhofer UMSICHT institute jointly investigate a novel approach of producing bio methane within the research project “Ash-to-Gas”. In cooperation with the project partners, a mobile fermenter shall be built and coupled to an allothermal steam gasifier. The sustenance of the microorganisms shall be carried out either by leading the ash particles from the gasifier directly into the fermenter or after performing various purification processes. With this set-up, methanogenesis shall adapt step by step to the conditions of using lignocellulosic feedstock in the gasifier. The experiments shall use wood, straw and roadside vegetation. Under realistic conditions it shall be measured, how much carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and hydrocarbons (including tar) can be converted respectively tolerated. Another objective is to find out, whether ash particles can supply nutrients to the microorganisms in a sufficient way.
