Abstract:
In the biochemical conversion route of biomass, pretreatments are indispensable to the efficient production process of fuels, plastics, chemicals and specialty chemicals. It is a very energy-intensive step. Here, a mathematical model is developed to evaluate the energy required during the pretreatment of biomass for the production of ethanol. The model was developed using the dilute acid pretreatment process reported by National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) as the basis for its development. The energy demand of the pretreatment process was evaluated by considering thechange of internal energy of the substances and the reaction energy constructed on a number of simplifying assumptions. Sensitivity analyses were performed on the solid loading rate, temperature and acid concentration, the results of which showed that the solids loading rate had the most significant impact on the energy demand.
