Abstract:
Ethanol production in Brazil is expected to expand rapidly in the coming decades. However, large scale deployment of energy crops could have adverse environmental and socio-economic impacts. Many of the impacts are related to (in-)direct land use changes. The objective of this study is to make an integrated assessment of the sustainability of the expanding ethanol sector, making use of a modelling framework including a Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model and a spatiotemporal land allocation model. A scenario approach is used to explore the land use change effects of an expanding ethanol sector in Brazil and the effectiveness of measures to prevent indirect land use changes and related impacts.
